Glass Piece: New Opera on Disney
Unless you’re one of the three or four people in the world who hasn’t seen “Fantasia,” you know that Disney, contrary to the usual elitist bashing, does indeed have a connection to “classical” music. So why should it shock us that composer Philip Glass has been commissioned by New York City Opera to write a new opera about Walt Disney? The work will kick off NYCO’s 2012-2013 season. That’s before Charles Wuorinen’s opera, for the same company, based on “Brokeback Mountain.” I’m not sure which I’m looking forward to less.
