Wainwright Dropped by the Met
I’m sorry to hear that “Prima Donna,” the new opera by Rufus Wainwright (pictured), won’t be produced at the Metropolitan Opera. The stated reason is that the pop star is composing the piece in French and the Met wants English. Like the Met doesn’t mostly, already, put on operas in languages other than English? A more disturbing reason for the fall-out: the Met couldn’t promise to stage the work before 2014. I realize that opera seasons are planned years in advance but six years? Even the Iraq War may be over by then! At least the Wainwright will have a home next July at the Manchester International Festival in England. Maybe there will be a recording.
