First Mac, Now the “Shaft” Man
First the death of Bernie Mac, now that of Isaac Hayes (pictured): it’s been a sad weekend for the ranks of African-American entertainment. The under-40 crowd knows Hayes as the voice of Chef from “South Park,” of whose many classic moments the “salty chocolate balls” episode is my favorite. For me, though, Hayes will always be remembered for his “Theme from Shaft“, whose lyrics were so suggestive that when we performed them in my high-school chorus concert senior year they were censored with a heavy hand.
