Don’t Cry for Meryl and Company

It used to be the male-dominated movies — actioners, Sandleresque comedies — that could be critic proof. This summer, however, it’s the chick flicks that are doing big multiplex business no matter how far down the reviewers grind their thumbs. First, there was the “Sex and the City” movie. Now, it’s “Mamma Mia.” That ABBA-fest opened this past weekend overseas, and did jumbo business. The United States is next, this Friday. And anyone who thinks that this tacky musical is going to be obscured by a superhero’s wing (“The Dark Knight,” featuring a flame-farting Batmobile) needs to recall two summers ago, when another Meryl Streepfest (“The Devil Wears Prada”) opened the same day as “Superman Returns” and did very well, thank you.
