Keira To Appear in “Lear”-a

Keira Knightley (pictured) will star in an upcoming movie version of “King Lear” — and, no, she won’t be the monarch. (And, yes, the title role has been played in the past by a woman.) Knightley will play Cordelia, the youngest daughter of the King, who will be portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins. Gwyneth Paltrow is tipped to take the role of Regan, Lear’s treacherous middle daughter. His eldest daughter, Goneril, is yet to be cast. Since Hopkins will never play Lear on the stage (his colossal stage fright apparently remains unabated), it will be good to see him in the part, though I doubt that anyone will ever surpass Paul Scofield in the role.
