Tenor Knocks ‘Em Nearly Dead
The hottest performing-arts ticket in New York right now, even (because of its short run) tougher to procure than “South Pacific,” is the Met’s production of Donizetti’s opera “La Fille du Regiment.” The staging premiered on Monday (I’m seeing it next week) and is already causing lots of Internet chatter because of its stars, Natalie Dessay and Juan-Diego Florez (pictured). The latter singer hit the nine high Cs of the aria “Pour mon ame,” and then in a nearly unprecedented move for the Met, reprised the piece and hit them all again. (Here’s a video link to this vocal feat.) Pavarotti, who once owned the role, is I hope burping with approval from his grave.
