The eagerly awaited revival of Peter Shaffer’s “Equus,” which was a hit at London’s Gielgud Theatre, will begin previews Sept. 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe (pictured) and Richard “History Boys” Griffiths will head the cast. Opening night will be September 22 and the show will play through February 8, 2009. Tickets go on sale to Amex Gold Card members on April 12 by visiting www.telecharge.com. The dressing-room-door security for Radcliffe will have to be of Olympic-relay-torch proportions. “Equus” is about a teenage boy who has a pathological obsession/attraction to horses. When the drama was on Broadway in the 1970s, the story would touch off nightly debates among theatregoers, struggling to piece out its meanings. Supposedly, Oscar-winning actress Maureen Stapleton, after seeing the play, didn’t wait till she made it to the bar at Sardi’s before trying to figure it out. Making her way up the aisle to the exit, she turned to her companion and blurted out, “Maybe I’m stupid, but you’ll have to tell me: did the kid fuck the horse? Well, did he?”
