News About the “Phantom” Sequel

At the opening night party last night for “South Pacific” (now a certifiable monster hit at Lincoln Center Theater), director Jack O’Brien told me a few things about the sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera” that he will be directing — with Andrew Lloyd Webber naturally writing the music. The sequel takes the Phantom to Coney Island in New York several years after the original story. Casting is still being determined, but it looks like the first act will be done this July at Lloyd Webber’s Sydmonton festival in England, with a workshop of the show to happen in November in London. The world premiere of the entire new show will probably take place in London in the autumn of 2009.
