Composer: “La Traviata” Is Rubbish
A splashy musical version of the story known to operagoers as “La Traviata” and to movie buffs as “Camille” is about to open in London. Here’s what one of the musical’s heavyweight creators says unmincingly about the story: “Marguerite [Violetta in the opera] has made love a thousand times without love and, for the first time, she meets someone to whom she dedicates her life, even though she is going to die soon. So I’ve never understood how Armand’s father tells her to give him up for a phantom virgin girl who doesn’t really exist.
