What Are the Chances for “Xanadu”?
A few readers of this website have sent me emails about a recent post, asking whether I think that “Xanadu” could also be a contender for the Tony Award for Best Musical. My answer: Yes. But I think it’s a little too small-scale to go all the way; and to score a nomination it would have to displace “Passing Strange,” since “In the Heights,” “Cry-Baby,” and “A Catered Affair” look like semi-locks. (Lately, there are usually four nominees in each major category.) The nominating committee will probably want to prove its downtown cred with “Passing Strange.”
