Oscars: About Those Ratings
Yesterday, the media trumpeted the fact that Sunday’s Oscars — yeah, they were pretty boring — were low-rated: “only” an average of 32 million tuned in at any given time. We were told that this year’s high-rated Super Bowl, by contrast, got up into the high 90s: three times as much. Well, guess what? Those were the American ratings. In the rest of the world, where soccer not American football is the game of choice, the Oscar broadcast this year still kicked the Super Bowl’s ass. The worldwide estimate of people who tuned in to the Oscars at some point: one billion. The Super Bowl is estimated to have drawn around 150 million around the globe.
