Get “Dirty” and Get Rich
If you want further proof that hoofers are a hot commodity in the entertainment world, here it is: Echoing its blockbuster success in Sydney, London, and Hamburg, the North American premiere production of “Dirty Dancing — The Classic Story On Stage” has broken box office records in Toronto. (I love the live show’s extended title. What’s next: “Ferris Bueller — The Classic Movie on Broadway”?) The musical adaptation of the 1987 coming-of-age pic grossed $1,373,903 in American dollars in the sell-out week ending Dec. 30, establishing a new record for the 100-year-old Royal Alexandra Theater and for a weekly theatrical presentation in Toronto. Producers say the show has been seen by more than 90,000 people since it began performances on Oct. 31. The U.S. tour of “Dirty Dancing” is expected to kick off in Chicago next September, with subsequent cities and a possible Broadway date to be announced.
