At Last: Opera Meets Hip-Hop!

Over the past decade, there have been a few attempts to mesh “Meistersinger” with MC, or “Boheme” with Biggie. But mostly people who like both opera and hip-hop (I know I’m not the only one) have been well-advised to keep those playlists separate on their iPods. Here’s another attempt to marry the genres: once again, it’s going to have teenagers swearing off Purcell and Puccini for life. To wit: someone has set the latest opus of Jay-Z to sliced-up snippets of opera and Broadway showtunes. It’s “American Gangster: The Opera.” The concept isn’t exactly novel: Eurotrash directors have been setting Verdi to Mafia-type backdrops for years.
