Academy Award Question of the Day
Could Frank Langella, who’s collecting a sheaf of A-plus notices today for his performance as an aged novelist in the movie “Starting Out in the Evening,” score an Oscar nomination for the role? From what I’ve heard of the film, his character doesn’t seem Oscar-showy enough for Langella to win, but who knows? If he did step up to the Oscar podium, that would make two big-awards speeches in the space of a calendar year for the New Jersey native, who turns 70 on New Year’s Day. He won a Tony for playing Nixon in Peter Morgan’s play “Frost/Nixon,” and if the movie version, due for release late next year and directed by Ron Howard, is any good, that role, not the “Evening” novelist, seems more likely to be Langella’s Oscar.
