The Latest on “West Side Story”
This past summer, which saw the popular and (mostly) critical success of his production of “Gypsy,” for which he wrote the book, Arthur Laurents said that he was working on a Broadway revival of “West Side Story,” for which he also wrote the book. Laurents stated his disappointment in the 1980 Broadway production of “West Side Story” and remarked, “I’ve come up with a way of doing it that will make it contemporary without changing a word or a note.” The revival was said to be scheduled for 2008. Lemonwade has learned that it will likely be pushed back to February or March 2009. Maybe that means last summer’s “Gypsy,” starring Patti LuPone, will make it to Broadway in the interim.
