The Latest on “Charlie Wilson’s War”
I’ve spoken to a couple of people who saw a recent version of the Christmas release “Charlie Wilson’s War,” which concerns a Texas congressman who conspired with a CIA officer to launch an invasion into Afghanistan. Both these sources confirm one thing that’s been making the rounds of Internet movie sites: Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s performance as the CIA officer is absolutely the zingiest thing in the picture. My sources say that the movie is highly enjoyable and full of the smart-ass (sometimes insufferable, more often brilliant) dialogue we’ve come to associate with the film’s screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin. My spies predict that the movie will be a very solid hit, with the presence of its stars, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, guaranteed to help ka-ching ka-ching the box-office registers over the holidays. The only complaint one of my sources mentioned was that the movie “doesn’t pack much of an emotional punch: it isn’t big-hearted.” Neither spy was willing to predict the Oscar fate of the film, other than the almost-certain nominations of Hoffman as supporting actor and Nichols as director.
