Can “Little Mermaid” Be Big Hit?
When the musical version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” tried out in Denver over the summer, the less-than-glowing reviews carried headlines like “All Wet!” and “Waterlogged!” Despite the tepid notices, the show is not getting the kind of overhaul that Disney’s “Aida” benefited from several years ago. The Mouse House apparently is confident that the show will be a hit on Broadway, if for no other reason than because the name recognition of the title alone is huge, and, unlike the “Tarzan” musical of a few years back, the primary appeal of “Mermaid” is to girls, who tend to like Broadway a little more than boys. The photo here is the first officially released production shot of the musical, which comes to Broadway November 3.
