“Pushing Daisies” Set To Sprout
For more than a month, so many daisies have sprouted throughout New York that one might think it was the beginning not of fall but of spring. I’m talking about the billboards and bus-stop signs for the new ABC show “Pushing Daisies,” which premieres on Wednesday. I approached viewing of the first episode with skepticism: it had whimsy written all over it. After watching this story of a piemaker (the appealing Lee Pace) who discovers at a young age that he has the power to bring the dead back to life, I can’t say that I’ll be DVR-ing it regularly. But I’m eager to watch another episode — something I can’t say about any of the other new TV shows this season.
“Pushing Daisies” is so visually distinctive (shades of Tim Burton) that I fear it won’t be able to attract the immediate ratings essential to its survival. On the other hand, the fan base is considerable for the costars: Kristin Chenoweth and Swoosie Kurtz. (Note to Ms. Kurtz: enough with the plastic surgery!)
