Once Is More Than Enough
Am I the only person in the country who found the indie movie “Once” to be, in the phrase of Brit wit Quentin Crisp, “as boring as being alive”?
This shaggy-dog musical set in Dublin has done phenomenal box office, relative to cost, since it was released in the U.S. earlier this year. The studio Fox Searchlight is already pushing it toward year-end awards as if it were 2007’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” But “Once” has little of the Little Miss’s broad appeal. It has a roughness that speaks to self-consciously anti-Hollywood filmgoers, but I found it surprisingly sentimental.
